Who is a Carer?

A carer is someone of any age who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner, a child or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. Anyone can become a carer; carers come from all walks of life, all cultures and can be of any age. Caring may be sudden and unexpected or could be developed over a period of time.  A caring role may last a few months or years but for some it may last for the rest of their lives.

Young Carers

To help young carers, we work with families to ensure that our young people receive the right support. We undertake assessments in school or at a mutually agreed location and create a care plan to meet that child’s needs. This could include an offer of attending our groups, peer mentoring, contingency planning, access to funding, breaks, counselling or 1:1 support.

YouCan Programme

YouCan is a six week program, delivered in schools, designed to help young carers to build self-esteem and develop peer support within school.

It was a pleasure and joy to be involved in such a successful health event which I feel was very effective in enabling service users to gain information and raise awareness of the local services and support available for them. It was very well organised and run – so very well done!
