Mervin Thomas had been unemployed for 25 years before he was referred to us. He was convinced that being over 50, he would never be able to go self-employed.
In their initial discussions getting to know each other, Victoria, his dedicated Enterprise Advisor, found out that Mervin had been playing the drums since he was five years old but never took that further than a hobby. Further conversations where they discussed his hobbies, passions, skills, revealed that Mervin was very keen to pass on his drums skills to disadvantaged people through workshops.
With the help of The Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise (PRIME) loan, we purchased drums and transport and got Mervin off to a good start as a self-employed music teacher. A highlight in his years of self-employment is meeting HRH The Prince of Wales, as one of the successful businesses started up with PRIME!
Mervin’s business is still going strong after 12 years. He teaches drumming workshops to many community groups and charities throughout the Northeast. These include working with the blind, deaf, disadvantaged communities, children and adults with learning needs, disabled people and children with behavioural problems.
