Augustus Martin speaks of how PeoplePlus have been instrumental in their training, development and wellbeing journey

Before working with PeoplePlus, Augustus Martin did not have a company culture that embraced training and development. Eighteen months later they are fully embraced in a developmental culture and cannot get enough of training opportunities. Donna Curran-James, HR Director, tells their story of change and why PeoplePlus was instrumental in the journey.

“I was first approached by PeoplePlus to discuss the apprenticeship levy in early 2018. I had been contacted by a number of training providers already, but I liked the simplicity of everything being under one roof, which PeoplePlus offered. On very early conversations with the Sales Manager; Liz it was apparent that there were many avenues we could go down, and I became excited about the possibilities available to Augustus Martin.”

“Augustus Martin wanted to set up a client services department, so choosing Customer Service as our initial apprenticeship seemed a sensible option. When the apprenticeship delivery started I was aware that for some people on the apprenticeship, this was their first time back in a classroom in over 30 years and there were some initial reservations. However the support, guidance and direction given by the trainers at PeoplePlus soon put everyone at ease and the group had an excellent rapport from a very early stage.”

“From there it just got bigger and better. I was aware that our colleagues needed to be working more efficiently and would benefit from some developmental training, specifically for our managers on how to hold effective 121 meetings and how to handle challenging conversations. Again, Liz made it all possible and the feedback received from the individuals was exceptional. Our managers now feel more confident and morale has visibly increased. The 121 procedure is now firmly embedded within the company.”

“The next step of our journey has been around health and wellbeing. I could see the impact the 121 training had and through Liz’s guidance was able to see a real opportunity to undertake the PeoplePlus Mental Health First Response course, swiftly followed by the Essentials in Mental Health and Wellbeing for Managers course. One of the trainers was PeoplePlus’ Head of Wellbeing Rob, who had an infectious personality and the skills and techniques to talk around some challenging subjects.
There is a notable awareness of positive wellbeing and mental health across the business now, and it’s so important that we now know some of the key signs to look out for.”

“Our journey with PeoplePlus is still continuing as we start our new apprenticeships programme for our Senior Leaders and planning for Sales Team workshops. It is so clear to see how those individuals who have done the training with PeoplePlus have been impacted by it. They have the confidence to put their ideas forward, time is being saved through effective conversations and the business is clearly profiting through the time spent in up-skilling its workforce. Having gone from being a company that never valued training, to being proactively asked for more is really quite remarkable; thank you PeoplePlus.”
