Debbie recently became one of our Fair Start Scotland participants after, unexpectedly, being made redundant from her job as a Personal Assistant. Here she talks about her journey on the programme.
“Being unemployed was a new situation to me, as l have always worked since leaving school in 1978. I contacted my local Job Centre, who suggested getting in touch with Fair Start with PeoplePlus due to my age (58) and having a disability.
I was allocated a Key Worker (Douglas Cassidy) who was encouraging & kept me motivated. The type of job l was looking for in the Care Sector were very few and far between because of the Covid 19 lockdown. I was also put in touch with Annette & Lesley, who further helped me with my job search, by facilitating virtual job fairs via social media, which were useful to learn about what was on offer in the Care Sector.
Recently, Annette went through a mock interview with me, and gave me pointers on how to better my interview skills. I also wrote a Supporting Statement, that Annette assisted with by ‘putting meat on the bones’.
I recently had an interview for a Personal Assistant post and have just been informed l got the job!
I would very much like to thank Douglas, Annette & Lesley for the ongoing and unwavering support they have given me. I would highly recommend Fair Start Scotland to anyone who needs additional help to secure employment, when you are disadvantaged by age, disability etc.
Getting PeoplePlus involved was the best thing l ever did to enhance my likelihood of being offered a job!”
