Ipswich Skills Centre Grand Opening

PeoplePlus Ipswich, an adult education centre which supports around 100 people a month, has been given a complete overhaul to enhance the environment for customers and create more learning and employment opportunities.

Sarah Howard, MBE, Chair of British Chamber of Commerce and Past President and Current Board Member of Suffolk Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon to officially mark the opening.

It now has three classrooms, a kitchen and an area for people to work in a supportive environment and use our computers if they so wish. The courses vary from Entry Level and go up to Level 2 (GCSE Grade 4 and above), with progression to Level 3 provision, Apprenticeships, Self-Employment or Employment.

PeoplePlus continue to transform the lives of people who may need additional support, such as people wishing to progress their careers along with learning challenges, those who struggle with low confidence and people who do not speak English as their first language.

Many of the staff at the centre, have learning difficulties themselves, which they stated has helped them build strong relationships with the learners.

Sam Dempsey, the Functional Skills trainer at the centre, said: “I was in the job centre one day, promoting PeoplePlus, there was a young lady who was seeing her job coach. She’s a single mum with five children, and she was really struggling with life and had contemplated suicide.  She heard my dulcet tones and said ‘I had an inviting smile’; so, she came over to see what I was talking about. Since then she has completed E3 up to Level 2 English, an Employability course and is completing various distance learning courses also. Through all of this learning, my learner has grown enough in confidence to face her demons and move on in life. She is learning to drive and has applied for University this year. What we do really makes a difference.”

PeoplePlus are also keen to engage with local Employers to help bridge skills gaps and ensure a smooth transition into work for those wishing to start or change careers, with recruitment a part of this offer.

PeoplePlus has a goal to help 1 million people by 2022 and it is on track to meet its target having supported some 378,000 people to date.
