Meet our Director of Health and Wellbeing – Rob Woollen

One of the things that makes PeoplePlus really special is our people. One of those people is Rob Woollen, our Director of Health and Wellbeing. Rob has a real passion for wellbeing and says his mission is to “make wellbeing the norm in the workplace”. We’d like to introduce you to him so keep reading to gain an insight into his experience and background.

Rob holds an MSc in Work and Wellbeing and Post-graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Rob is a fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH) and the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and was one of the first civilian fitness instructors to be recognised at Level 4 by the Register of Exercise Professionals.

Rob’s academic research interests are in the areas of resilience, and the nature of “good work”. In addition to leading our consultancy and research projects, Rob has trained hundreds of workplace wellbeing champions and mental health first responders across the UK in a wide range of organisations. For many years, Rob contributed to the development of mental health and health improvement qualifications for the RSPH.

Having left school at the age of sixteen for a career in construction (becoming an award-winning project engineer), he has first-hand experience of the issues faced by both manual and professional workers in high pressure environments. Rob lectures part-time at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) Business School and has sat on the School’s Strategic Advisory Board; is a past chair of the North West Health and Physical Activity Forum; a contributor to the pan- European Resilience Project, and an assessor for the Workplace Wellbeing Charter.

Rob has been involved in a number of working groups for NICE guidelines – including for the development of the Mental Wellbeing at Work guidelines. Alongside this, he is a prizewinning speaker at international academic conferences, is regularly asked to speak by the BBC, and has been published in Occupational Health magazine.

Rob leads the Wellbeing team at Peopleplus, who are all professionals qualified to post-graduate level in a relevant health-related field. His team are there to help organisations navigate the complex world of employee wellbeing, develop a culture of wellness, and inspire long term behaviour change in individuals.
