Last week we attended the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards of which we are a sponsor and it was fantastic to spend the evening with so many hardworking apprentices, providers and employers and to celebrate the work we do.
The awards were held at the Caird Hall in Dundee by the national skills agency – Skills Development Scotland and saw over 350 people attend from a range of companies including our apprenticeship partners Lloyds Banking Group, and Dawnfresh who had the honour of seeing their first Graduate Apprentice – Jordan, receive the Modern Apprentice of the Year award sponsored by J.P. Morgan.
We are fantastically proud of the work we do in Scotland on our apprenticeship programme and that as a result of our delivery, nearly 90% of apprentices say they have enough time outside of their learning time to work on their own development. This kind of personal development activity is what gives way to creative ideas such as Jordan’s cost saving initiative avoiding £60,000 spending for Dawnfresh by single-handedly solving a customer’s packaging issue.
We also heard from Deputy First Minister, John Swinney MSP who sent a filmed message where he told us “The Scottish Apprenticeship Awards showcase the best in work-based learning and the finalists represent tens of thousands of apprentices in training throughout Scotland, each with their own story to share and to be proud of.”
Winners on the night included:
Hayley Donaldson, Pheonix Group – Apprentice Ambassador of the Year, sponsored by QA.
Joe Pirrie – Foundation Apprentice of the Year sponsored by Balfour Beatty.
Mirhan Smith, The Larder Cook School – Modern Apprentice of the Year, sponsored by College Development Network.
David William Mackenzie – Graduate Apprentice Rising Star, sponsored by the Centre for Work Based Learning.
