The Carers Hub Raises Awareness for Young Carers
This year the 31st January is National Young Carers Awareness day, a day to celebrate and raise awareness for all the things Young Carers do in their caring role. The Carers Hub which provides vital help and support to those who undertake caring duties, organised a range of activities for Young Carers to take part in around the day which included:
A trip to Stoke Ski Centre for the Young Carers to take part in a tubing activity. An activity like this every now and again is vital in giving Young Carers the chance to have a break from their caring role as well as giving them the chance to meet other Young Carers. All sixteen young carers enjoyed their evening sliding down slopes in inflatable rings, helped by the snow we had earlier in the day.
We also ran our YouCan programme in schools across Staffordshire. The YouCan program takes place in a school over six weeks and gives Young Carers and teachers the chance to get a better understanding of the role they play. It looks at how the school can help support and understand that Young Carers may need more time with homework or be able to have their mobile phones available in the classroom in case of emergencies.
We also ran one of our Young Carers Hub clubs where we invited Oliver from the organisation ‘Changes’ to come and talk to the Young Carers. Changes help to support Young Carers who are having a particularly difficult time due to other factors that affect the way they may behave or act that isn’t just affected by their caring role.
