Breaking the Stigma: How Education Transforms Lives for Ex-Offenders

At PeoplePlus, we’re dedicated to transforming lives through education, especially for those who have been through the criminal justice system. As the UK’s largest independent provider of prison education, we offer over 600 accredited courses across 22 prisons, delivering more than two million hours of face-to-face learning each year. Our mission is to equip ex-offenders with the skills they need to successfully re-enter society, from basic literacy and maths to job-ready qualifications.

Overcoming Challenges After Release

Finding a job after prison is incredibly challenging. Many ex-offenders face discrimination, with over half of employers hesitant to hire someone with a criminal record (Unlock). This makes it difficult for them to rebuild their lives, with only 17% managing to find work within a year of their release (Prison Reform Trust).

How Education Makes a Difference

Education can help break this cycle. Research shows that ex-offenders who participate in educational programmes while in prison are 25% less likely to re-offend (Prisoners' Education Trust). However, only about 42% of prisoners currently have access to meaningful education or vocational training (Dame Sally Coates’ Review on Prison Education), highlighting the need for more opportunities.

At PeoplePlus, we’re working hard to change this. Our courses are designed to meet job market demands, helping ex-offenders develop the skills they need to succeed after prison. From basic skills to qualifications that employers recognise.

Progress and Employer Support

There are signs of progress. Since April 2022, the proportion of prison leavers finding work within six weeks of release has increased from 15% to 19% (GOV.UK), with a further 30% in work after 6 months, up from 23% (GOV.UK). While this is encouraging, there’s still much work to be done.

At PeoplePlus we’re also partnering with employers through initiatives like "Ban the Box" to promote fair hiring practices. This helps reduce the stigma of having a criminal record and opens up more job opportunities for ex-offenders. Interestingly, 75% of employers who have hired ex-offenders report that they are just as reliable as other workers (Unlock).

Additionally, companies like Timpson, Sodexo, and PJ Foods are leading the way in supporting individuals with convictions. These employers actively hire ex-offenders and provide opportunities for them to reintegrate into the workforce, demonstrating their commitment to fair and inclusive hiring practices.

Employer Insights: Rab’s Experience at Timpson

A key example of supportive employer practices comes from Rab from Timpson. He emphasises that “it’s all about second chances and the right to change.” His experience shows that ex-offenders, like other recruits, bring a mix of qualities to the workplace. Many work hard and see their job as a crucial opportunity for redemption, while others may face challenges.

Rab finds the experience both positive and eye-opening. He advises other employers to be open-minded and ensure candidates are genuinely motivated to learn and grow. This approach, combined with a thorough recruitment process, can lead to successful integration.

A Success Story: Lowan’s Journey

To bring these efforts to life, we’re excited to share the story of Lowan, an ex-offender who turned his life around with the help of PeoplePlus. After his release from prison, Lowan secured a life-changing opportunity working at The Priory Hotel. Lowan talks about his journey and how this opportunity helped him rebuild his life:

Moving Forward Together

Re-entering society after prison is challenging, but with the right support, it’s possible. At PeoplePlus, we’re committed to providing high-quality education and working with employers to create more opportunities for ex-offenders. By continuing to expand access to education and promote fair hiring practices, we can help more ex-offenders, like Lowan, rebuild their lives and contribute to a more inclusive society.
