Catching the Chain exhibition featuring work from learners at hMP the Mount doing PeoplePlus education in prison

PeoplePlus is excited to share that learners from HMP The Mount are having their work exhibited as part of the Catching the Chain exhibition, which opened earlier this month at St Albans Museum + Gallery. This collaborative exhibition examines the criminal justice system through various creative works, and our learners have contributed a piece of music, composed and performed as part of their Music Technology course.

The exhibition, developed in partnership with over 10 organisations, including HACRO (Hertfordshire Association for the Care and Rehabilitation of Offenders), Colour Me In Wellbeing, and Fine Cell Work, brings together voices from inside and outside the criminal justice system. These partnerships have created a piece of work that reflects individual experiences and perspectives, adding to the wider conversation about life in prison and the process of re-entering society.

As part of the Catching the Chain Project, PeoplePlus learners created a musical composition that explores their personal experiences of prison life and is featured in the exhibition alongside an animated video produced by students and staff from the University of Hertfordshire’s School of Creative Arts.

The music was composed by one of our learners in the prison’s music studio. Since joining the course, he has achieved his Music Level 2 qualification, as well as qualifications in English and maths. He now supports other learners as a Peer Mentor within the education department. The lyrics and vocal performances were developed by seven additional learners, expressing themes such as separation from family, life in prison, and hopes for the future.

PeoplePlus delivers education and training opportunities across multiple prisons, and we are pleased to see the efforts of our learners included in this exhibition, which offers a space for reflection and dialogue on the criminal justice system.

The exhibition runs until April ’25. Catching the Chain | St Albans Museums
