Mindful Matching in our Creative Spaces Class at HMP Warren Hill

At PeoplePlus, our focus is to enhance skills and support rehabilitation of the learners with whom we work, in the 22 prisons where we deliver education. We understand that part of education and learning is to help our learners develop a growth mindset, which often extends outside of direct learning and into more mindful and creative activites. One project, the 'Creative Space Workshop,' taking place at HMP Warren Hill, offers inmates the opportunity to participate in crafting activities, specifically the 'Mindful Matching' project. Taking place every Friday and facilitated by peer leaders, this initiative emphasises skill development and productive use of time.

The objective of our workshops is straightforward - to introduce constructive activities that aid in learning new skills while fostering a sense of accomplishment. 'Mindful Matching' is designed to minimise isolation and improve social skills by promoting group participation and confidence building. Popular with learners who often disengage from other prison activities due to lack of confidence, they are able to come together and spend a stress free afternoon matchstick modelling together. The workshop aims to create a supportive, safe space where learners spend time away from the wings. They have something to look forward to on a Friday afternoon and more inmates are signing up each week.

At PeoplePlus we understand that rehabilitation extends beyond traditional educational achievements. It's about equipping inmates with the tools they need for personal development and potential reintegration into society. Projects like matchstick modelling are integral to this vision, providing not only a creative outlet but also a pathway to developing patience and resilience.

Our team of educators and coaches is dedicated to supporting each participant's learning journey. They offer individualised attention to address the specific needs of our learners, ensuring engagement and progress. By implementing projects like the 'Creative Space Workshop,' PeoplePlus contributes to building a learning environment within prisons that values skill development, creativity, and personal growth. Our initiatives are designed with the dual purpose of enhancing the educational experience and preparing participants for future opportunities, emphasising practical skills and constructive engagement.
