Turning Setbacks into Stepping Stones

Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way, but for James, these setbacks have become stepping stones to a brighter future, thanks to the support of Fair Start Scotland.

In June 2022, life took an unexpected turn for James. After a successful career as a private hire taxi driver, a detached retina forced him to stop working. As a self-employed individual, this was a significant blow. To add to the struggle, a fall resulting in a fractured elbow and wrist soon followed due to the blurriness from his eye condition. Multiple hospital visits over the course of a year became necessary as his injuries refused to heal properly.

Feeling stuck at home and battling declining mental health, James found hope through a recommendation from his Job Centre work coach. The coach suggested Fair Start Scotland, a service designed to help individuals like him regain their footing and find new employment opportunities. Intrigued by the possibility of change, he decided to sign up.

From the moment James walked through the doors of Fair Start Scotland, he felt welcomed. His Key Worker, Debi, made the process seamless and introduced him to various courses and support groups. One of the first opportunities was joining a progression group led by trainer David.

Participation in a six-week routeway course was a turning point. James connected with peers of a similar age, forming a supportive network that eased the journey. Despite having extensive work experience, he hadn't attended an interview since school. The course helped him craft a CV and prepare for job interviews, skills that had become rusty over the years.

Regular activities such as the Let's Talk walking group and the Good to Gab group on Tuesdays became highlights of his week. These sessions offered not just physical activity but also social interaction and mental stimulation, making Tuesdays something to look forward to. “The walking group and Good to Gab group have been brilliant because realistically, that is the only adult interaction I have” he expressed.

The service wasn't just about job hunting; it was about personal growth. Debi encouraged James to join a football fitness club, which proved to be a game-changer for his mental and physical health. The club's focus on nutrition, fitness, and mental well-being, combined with the physical activity of playing football, led to a remarkable 12kg weight loss in just three months. This boost in confidence and positivity was transformative.

James also discovered new interests, such as making pasta from scratch during a cooking session with the Friday group. While the first attempt was a bit undercooked, it sparked a new hobby and a reminder that learning is a continuous process.

Though he is still in the process of finding employment, the journey with Fair Start Scotland has been profoundly positive. He expresses heartfelt gratitude to Debi, David, and the entire team at PeoplePlus. The personalised attention, encouragement, and genuine care have made a significant impact. From June at reception, who always asks how he’s doing, to David and other staff, the experience has been one of feeling seen and valued.
