Bookflix is just one of the initiatives we've introduced across the education departments in the 22 prisons we work with at PeoplePlus.

In adult prisons, literacy levels average out to be about the same as an eleven-year-old's. At PeoplePlus, we're dedicated to changing that. One way we're doing this is by promoting reading for pleasure through our Bookflix initiative. Working with the prison libraries, we encourage inmates to share reviews of the books they've read, hoping to inspire more reading among their peers.

Bookflix not only makes reading more enjoyable for inmates, but it also helps them improve their reading skills. With support from peer mentors and our Education team, inmates can find and read books they like, then write reviews. We make sure everyone can participate, even those who struggle with reading, by making Bookflix accessible to all. We provide easy-to-use review templates, available in different colors for learners with different needs. Our selection of reading materials includes fiction, non-fiction, magazines, and articles. We also recognize and reward progress and achievement with certificates and a "Review of the Month."

Feedback from learners shows that reading and writing reviews have boosted their confidence in reading and spelling. Being able to complete the review in their cell has also supported their mental health and well-being. Our English tutors have noticed improvements in reading and spelling, both in the classroom and in exam results.

Bookflix is making a significant impact in our prisons, proving that with the right support, everyone can learn and grow
