Employability Day 2024

For this year's Employability Day we’ll be celebrating people that we have helped to find sustainable work. People like Jake who marked the 2000th time we have placed someone into work through our Serco Restart scheme in Wales! We’re also holding events across the UK including breakfast and coffee events, quiz afternoon’s, walk and lunch events, and sales days.

Placing participants into work for the 2000th time is a fantastic achievement for the Restart team in Wales especially considering that in August their efforts meant that we were the first provider in Wales since the extension of the same contract to find a participant employment!

This is Jake's story

Jake joined the Restart scheme with PeoplePlus in Cwmbran in September 2023. When he first joined, he was dealing with severe anxiety, low confidence, and a lack of motivation to work. His primary goal was to become fit and healthy before starting employment, which was holding him back from progressing.

Jake’s Employment Advisor, Richard Phillips, provided regular support through appointments, helping him improve his CV and build his confidence. During these sessions, it became evident that Jake had previously faced difficulties with maths and English. He expressed a desire to retake his GCSEs in these subjects to improve his grades. Richard explored options for additional support, resulting in a referral to Torfaen Works, where Jake enrolled in the maths and English GCSE courses.

Throughout this period, Jake collaborated closely with both Torfaen Works and the Restart team. As his confidence grew, he was offered a 12-week paid work trial at Gus Periscopes in Cwmbran. By the end of this trial, he was offered a permanent position as a Manufacturing Operative, where his responsibilities included packing and assembling periscopes, as well as general cleaning and maintenance of the factory. Jake accepted the role and is now thoroughly enjoying his work.

This year’s Employability Day theme is – Employment Support for every citizen. We’re proud to work across the UK supporting those who are often further away from the labor market, to find sustainable work.

Our vision is for a society where every individual is able to reach their full potential, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Here are just a few more of the people we have supported...........
