PeoplePlus Tutor Shortlisted for Inspire Justice Awards
We are delighted to announce that Matthew Bysouth, our carpentry tutor at HMP Littlehey, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious Inspire Justice Awards. Matthew is one of only two finalists in the Educator of the Year category, a new addition to the awards in 2024, thanks to a suggestion from PeoplePlus.
The Inspire Justice Awards, organized by Skills for Justice, highlight the remarkable contributions of individuals and teams within the wider justice sector. These awards aim to recognise those who often go unnoticed but play a crucial role in maintaining the smooth operation of our criminal justice system.
Matthew Bysouth joined PeoplePlus in 2012, transitioning from a successful career as a professional carpenter to an inspiring educator. Without prior teaching experience, he gained his educational qualifications on the job, quickly establishing himself as a key figure in vocational education at HMP Littlehey. His commitment to high standards and innovative curriculum development has been instrumental in providing prisoners with valuable skills that enhance their prospects for rehabilitation and employment upon release.
A significant achievement in Matthew's career is the development of the Level 3 Carpentry course at HMP Littlehey, which had never been offered before. This course equips prisoners with advanced carpentry skills that meet industry standards, providing a vital progression route for those looking to build a career upon release. By helping prisoners achieve recognised qualifications, Matthew not only boosts their employability but also their confidence and self-esteem.
Matthew's manager praises his approach, stating, “He is humble, passionate about his craft, and always willing to share best practices with others. His initiative and ability to get the job done, coupled with his expertise and conscientious approach, ensure that he never compromises on professional standards. Matthew’s commitment to continuous improvement and his dedication to providing high-quality education and training make him an outstanding role model for both prisoners and colleagues.”
In addition to celebrating Matthew’s achievements, PeoplePlus is proud to be sponsoring the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiative of the Year category at this year’s awards.
The Inspire Justice Awards ceremony taking place on 12th September will provide an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional work of those like Matthew, who are dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Congratulations to all the finalists for their outstanding contributions to the justice sector!
