PeoplePlus is delivering The Restart Scheme as part of Serco’s network of delivery partners in Wales, and last week we saw our first job start in Cardiff.

The Restart Scheme has been commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions and will give Universal Credit claimants who have been out of work for between 12 to 18 months enhanced, bespoke support to find work in Wales. The £2.9b scheme is part of the Government’s ‘Plan for Jobs’ with referrals being made over a 3-year period.

Robert Steele who had been unemployed for 10 months, was referred to PeoplePlus from his work coach at the Job Centre at the end of July. Robert had been waiting for employment with his father on a large building contract, but this was taking too long and Robert knew he needed to seek an alternative route.

Robert attended his first meeting with PeoplePlus on 5th August, where our Job Coach Jannah Ling discussed his previous work experience and what future work was of interest to him. During the meeting Robert mentioned that he had not been applying for any jobs as he was waiting on his father. As part of his action plan Jannah set him the task of searching for suitable jobs and to apply for at least five roles by 16th August. She also took Robert through a list of jobsearch sites and agencies he could join, as well as emailing him roles that she thought might be suitable for him.

On 10th August Robert successfully joined RSW Bridgend, a recruitment agency, where he completed his induction and was offered a job with SAS International who is a market leading, international British designer and manufacturer of metal ceilings.

Robert has now started work and was thrilled with the support he received from PeoplePlus and excited about his future.

The Restart Scheme is designed to break down employment barriers that could be holding individuals back from finding work. PeoplePlus is working with employers, local government and other partners to deliver tailored support for individuals just like Robert, to help them find employment.

People can join the Restart Scheme through their local job centre.
