From Setback to Comeback: John’s Restart Success Story

John, aged 53 previously worked in a warehouse environment until a serious injury left him with ongoing mobility issues. Unable to return to physical work, John realised he needed to retrain and explore new opportunities better suited to his circumstances. His goal was to move into and office-based role whether that was admin, a contact centre or IT support – he was open to exploring.
Join joined the Restart scheme seeking guidance and support with his inevitable career change. He hadn’t applied for jobs or attended any interviews since 1990 and he felt unsure about the new modern job market.
Throughout his time on the programme John received valuable support from the PeoplePlus team on the Restart Scheme. His Employment Advisor, Masud, assisted him with job applications, updated his CV and helped him to prepare for interviews. Rob, the PeoplePlus Trainer, delivered clear and supportive training sessions that helped John to understand what employers were looking for. He also received regular check ins and motivation from Shannon, his Employer Relationship Manager who played a key role in encouraging him.
Although John faced several barriers particularly around confidence and adapting to a new type of job role the combined support he received from the team kept him focused and helped him to overcome those challenges.
John is now in remote employment which is perfect as it aligns with his current needs and abilities. While remote work wasn’t his original goal it has provided him with a strong starting point and a renewed sense of independence. He continues to work towards securing a role in an office-based environment and has narrowed it down to ideally be within and IT support or helpdesk role.
The experience with the Restart Scheme has had a significant impact on John’s confidence and outlook on life. His ambition is to keep developing his skills and ultimately build a stable and fulfilling career in a field that matches both his strengths and interests.
