International Women's Day: Lisa Talks Being A Carer

For years, I just thought I was being a daughter. A busy one, admittedly, but still, just a daughter. Mum's always been fiercely independent, but she started having falls. Each one was a jolt, some involving a rush to the hospital, and then the recovery time after each one. It wasn't until colleagues and people around me told me that I realised, I was a Carer.

Even then, it felt strange. I’ve worked with Carers for many years, and now am Regional Manager for Gloucestershire Carers Hub, I’ve seen and heard about all of the incredible things they do for others on a daily basis. But applying that label to myself? It was like trying on someone else's coat. I was just helping Mum. Taking her to appointments, sorting out her shopping, making sure she had a hot meal. Even with my extensive knowledge of the support available for Carers and where to go to find things which she or I needed it has and still is a journey to navigate.

I took over the role of chair for the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Carer Support group for PeoplePlus as I have caring experience, and I have a solid understanding of the challenges which unpaid Carers face especially balancing work and caring for someone. The role of chair allows me to see and hear other people’s experiences along with offering support and advice to them and feeding it back into the business of how Carers are feeling and the support which they need.

It's been incredible to see the difference it makes, just knowing you're not alone, and being part of a group where everyone understands. We can talk about finding the right care, dealing with the emotional toll, and simply having someone who understands.

If I can help others to identify as Carers and to find support from their local organisations, then I know I’m making a difference.

If I could have a coffee with my younger self, I would say don’t have regrets as that’s your path and you learn by it. No-one is going to tell you that you are going to become a parent for your parent and don’t be afraid and it’s part of the journey of life. Be strong, be patient but ultimately be kind to everyone, including yourself.
