Rebuilding a Life: How PeoplePlus Helped David Move On from Modern Slavery
At PeoplePlus, we believe in giving people the tools and support they need to overcome life’s toughest challenges, and David’s story is a powerful example of that mission in action.
David, 31, was the victim of modern slavery, forced to work in appalling conditions on a puppy farm. Trapped and exploited, he received only basic rations in return for relentless labour. His situation came to light thanks to an RSPCA investigation, which led to police involvement and, ultimately, his rescue.
When David was introduced to the Fair Start Scotland programme, delivered by PeoplePlus, he was ready to take the first steps towards rebuilding his life. He quickly connected with his keyworker and the local community team.
Working closely with his keyworker, David began rebuilding his confidence and employability. Together they created a new CV, completed job applications, and practiced for interviews, all designed to help David feel prepared, supported, and optimistic about the future.
Recognising that digital skills are essential in today’s job market, the team also helped David improve his IT confidence through tailored support and training. He quickly developed the ability to navigate job sites, complete online forms, and communicate effectively with potential employers.
Through our partnership with Brightwork, a trusted employability partner, we were able to secure David a role as a driver’s mate with Best Connection - a company known for its fair treatment of staff and strong workplace values.
This new job gives David more than just a regular income. It represents stability, dignity, and a clear route to independence. Reflecting on the support he received through the programme, David expressed deep gratitude for the practical guidance and genuine care that helped him turn a difficult chapter into a fresh start.
