Restarting Career Ideas - From Job Seeker to Employment Advisor

Vicky was referred to the PeoplePlus Sunderland office for the Restart Scheme on 22nd November 2024 after being out of work for just over a year. She was dedicated to securing employment in the security industry, and so, she completed both an SIA and CCTV license course and applied for roles in security, retail, and customer service. Unfortunately though, she was struggling to get responses from employers.
Upon joining the scheme, Vicky was paired with her dedicated Employment Advisor (EA), Laura, who immediately set to work identifying suitable job opportunities. Recognising the challenge of securing security roles without prior experience, Laura introduced Vicky to opportunities with Sunderland A.F.C as a Safety Steward. This role provided a crucial stepping stone, offering hands-on experience to strengthen her CV. Vicky attended an interview at the Restart office, secured the position, and was awaiting available shifts. The recruiters at SAFC even saw leadership potential in Vicky, with Rob, the Safety Steward recruiter, noting that he could see her leading a team in the future.
In addition to personalised job searching support, Vicky attended a job club organised by Laura. During the session, Laura observed Vicky’s natural ability to support and advise other participants. Inspired by her confidence and willingness to help others, Laura suggested that Vicky should consider a role as an Employment Advisor herself, as there were live vacancies available. She provided Vicky with the job description and encouraged her to assess how her skills aligned with the role.
Intrigued by the opportunity, Vicky took immediate action. She was traveling to London to watch a football match, one of her passions, at the time bit she didn’t let that stop her and she completed her application for the Employment Advisor position there and then. Her proactive approach paid off and within a week, she was invited to an interview, where she impressed the management team at PeoplePlus with her skills and determination.
Vicky’s journey came full circle when she was offered and accepted the Employment Advisor position. She is set to begin her new role on 10th March 2025. An achievement she credits to the Restart Scheme’s support and encouragement.
