Restoring Wheels, Rebuilding Lives: HMP Whatton's Bike Mechanics Initiative
Our education department at HMP Whatton is running a very successful initiative that allows the learners on the Cycle Mechanics courses to up-cycle and restore old bikes before donating them to a local charity.
Old bikes are donated from many sources, including the staff at Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Police.
The courses run every three weeks and between 6-8 men at a time get to work on taking apart the bikes to restoring and repairing them before donating them to a local charity shop to resell on. The skills learnt on the course enable the men to develop their mechanics skills which many use to enter employment or self-employment on their release.
One learner said: “The qualification and experience I have gained from the course will help me set up my own business when I get out. The workshop is so real, it is just like being at work”
