The Great Tommy Sleep Out

The Great Tommy Sleep Out is a fundraising challenge to support the Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) and the estimated 6,000 veterans that are experiencing homeless in the UK right now. Research suggests that up to 3% of people sleeping rough in England alone are veterans, and around 300 to 400 veterans end up on the streets every year.
The challenge doesn’t replicate rough sleeping, but it does give participants an insight into the situation too many of our nation’s heroes find themselves in. By sleeping out under the stars for one night in March, the intention is to raise funds and awareness to provide vital support to our Armed Forces community.
The 2025 Great Tommy Sleep Out
On Friday 21st March 2025, a group of veterans from the Rutland Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, PeoplePlus Catering Tutor Mark Taylor, undertook their own sleep out. The group, with representatives of all three British Armed Forces, set up camp in a wooded area normally utilised by scouts. Gathered round the campfire, the veterans spent the night sharing stories and reflecting on memories from service life.
The event itself was a huge success, the group have raised £813 so far and the date has already been set for their next Great Tommy Sleep Out on 20th March 2026.
