When Support Is More Than a Service

When Fatuma moved to Scotland, she came with one goal: to build a better life for herself and her 12-year-old son. To make the transition easier, her son initially stayed with friends in Switzerland while Fatuma focused on finding work and setting up a new home.

Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Travel restrictions and financial pressures made it impossible for her son to join her. Being apart from him during such a difficult time affected Fatuma’s mental health. She began to struggle with anxiety and depression and felt overwhelmed by the challenges she faced alone.

Through a referral from Jobcentre Plus, Fatuma was introduced to the Fair Start Scotland service. She joined the programme in July 2021 and was paired with Nikki, her dedicated Key Worker.

Nikki took the time to understand Fatuma’s situation and offered both practical and emotional support. While helping her with job searches and applications, Nikki also looked into the cost of flights and worked with Fatuma’s local church to raise the funds needed to bring her son home.

When Fatuma and her son were finally reunited, they returned to a flat with no electricity. Nikki immediately helped her apply for emergency welfare support and connected her with a local foodbank. She also supported Fatuma in enrolling her son in a nearby secondary school and helped her apply for Free School Meals and a Clothing Grant. To support their digital access, Nikki arranged for discounted broadband and helped Fatuma apply for a Chromebook.

Fatuma sent a message of gratitude to Nikki that said:

“Hi Nikki, hope you are doing well. Thanks very, very much — I will never forget you. I am where I am because of your effort.”
