Training, experience and a weekly allowance for 16 to 19 year olds in Wales
Jobs Growth Wales+ helps young people aged 16 to 19 in Wales get the skills, qualifications and experience to move into work or further learning like Apprenticeships, with a weekly training allowance.
We’ve designed the programme with local employers, so you know you’re getting the skills that are needed in the workplace. Whatever sector you’re thinking of going into, we can help.
What’s more, you’ll be paid to train. Earn while you learn.
This will give you a chance to test out a new career before you commit to further learning. And our expert team of mentors are on hand every step of the way to support you.
What support includes
You'll agree an individual learning plan with us, and we'll use it to organise training and activities around what you're interested in. Your work experience will reflect real job roles, and we'll support you every step of the way.
Engagement: for when you're not sure what career path you want to follow, or need more support before moving into work or learning. You can try out jobs you might be interested in before you commit to a course or apprenticeship. Activities can include learning in our centres, short work trials, work placements with local employers of up to four weeks at a time, community projects and voluntary work.
Advancement: for when you have a particular job or career in mind. You'll gain new skills and qualifications in your chosen subject, and work experience with a local employer. You might even get a real job interview at the end of your placement. Activities can include learning in our centres, work trials or placements, community projects and voluntary work.
We have learner centres in:
- Pontypridd
- Cwmbran
- Newport
Eligibility
To be eligible for a Traineeship in Wales, you must be:
- Aged 16-19, living in Wales, unemployed and not in full-time education; or
- Aged 16-19, living in Wales, and have left school or college
Training allowance
You can receive a training allowance of up to £60 a week. The amount depends on how many hours you take part, and the full £60 is paid when you attend for 30 hours or more in a week. On Advancement you need to attend for at least 16 hours a week. You'll also build up annual leave without it affecting your allowance.
Extra financial and personal support is available if you need it to complete the programme. Working Wales will talk through your circumstances with you.
