RFL Working with HMP Lincoln

A pilot 12-week programme delivered by the Rugby Football League (RFL) is under way at HMP Lincoln, for some of PeoplePlus' learners, which combines physical activity with personal development to support rehabilitation and mental wellbeing. Backed by the Social Recruitment Advocacy Group (SRAG), this pilot is part of a growing network of partnerships making social value a core part of the prison education experience.
The structured course runs one day per week and is designed to develop resilience, communication, and teamwork, alongside Rugby League-specific skills. Delivered by the RFL education team, the programme blends physical training with workshops focused on mental health, social skills and goal setting.
Fourteen learners at HMP Lincoln are currently taking part in the pilot, which has already received strong engagement. PeoplePlus tutor, Ian commented: “One lad on the programme had previously struggled to make friends, now he’s part of this he’s been training with the other lads and you can see friendships being forged.” Sessions will run until mid-August, with guest speakers and mentoring integrated into the delivery, for example former professional RFL player, Chev Walker will be taking a session with the men later this month. A graduation ceremony will be held at the end of the programme for the learners to celebrate everything they have achieved.
The RFL is a proud SRAG partner, committed to inclusive access to sport and employment opportunities. This pilot builds on their wider work to make Rugby League a force for good in communities on and off the pitch.
Dave Elliott, Head of Education at the RFL, said:
“This initiative reflects our deep commitment to education and the core values that underpin Rugby League. As part of the Rugby League family, we believe in creating inclusive opportunities and opening doors for individuals who may have never imagined such possibilities.
“Rugby League is more than just a sport. Through the Tackle Life Project, we’re demonstrating the transformative power of sport and education to change lives and build brighter futures.”
Kirsty Williamson, Education Manager at PeoplePlus said:
“It’s fantastic to see the learners pulling together as a team, it’s obvious they are learning so much being part of this programme. They’re looking forward to the graduation ceremony next month where they can showcase what they’ve learnt and how far they’ve come since the programme began.”
