We've caught up with Samantha and asked her some questions, here's what she had to say... What was your business, business idea when you came to Peopleplus? To launch a copywriting agency that provides powerful, impactful, and affordable copy alongside great service. At SPEAKHUMAN, we help businesses tell their stories without the buzzwords or fluff that dilute their message. Simply, we speak human to other humans. Background to your story with your business/business idea? I had worked as an independent freelance copywriter for many years and one of the phrases I uttered most to clients was, ‘we need to speak human’. There is so much copy that relies on buzzwords and filler rather than substance and it often means businesses find their messages are drowned out in a crowded online marketplace. I saw a gap in the market for an expert copywriting agency, offering clear, straight-talking copy aimed at small to medium-sized businesses as well as marketing and web design agencies. I began to build a small team of trusted freelance copywriters to support the agency and within a month SPEAKHUMAN had launched!

What support were you looking for to help your business, or start your business? Although I had been self-employed for many years, I’d never ran a limited company, and I was in the dark about a lot of important business skills! From business plans to bookkeeping, and budgets – I wanted to grow my knowledge and ensure we were on the right track from the very start. |
During your time on the programme how did PeoplePlus help you? One of the key things that the PeoplePlus programme has given me is confidence. Andy has acted as an expert sounding board, helping me to figure out my ideas and create a structured business plan while giving me the confidence to put things in motion. I had been thinking about setting up an agency for the last couple of years but going through the process with PeoplePlus has given me the knowledge and conviction to make it a reality. The dedicated workshops have also been fantastic at not only expanding my knowledge – on business planning, finances, social media marketing, and much more – but also in allowing me to connect with other people also going through the early stages of their business launch. It was nice to know other people are facing similar challenges! I particularly enjoyed the marketing 1-2-1 I did with Adam, his expertise on marketing services-based businesses was really helpful in allowing me to focus on what I wanted from my marketing plan and how I could bring my marketing strategy to life. |
The outcome What are the results for you and your business after participating in the Start Up West Yorkshire programme? SPEAKHUMAN successfully launched in April and we’re already exceeding our financial goals – I think a big part of this success is the knowledge and focus that I have gained through being part of the Start Up West Yorkshire programme. What are your plans for the future? We’re hoping to continue to grow steadily for the next 12 months and hopefully add permanent members of staff to our team in 2023. |
